5 Reasons to Use a Cudy Router

We are very excited to be introducing Cudy as one of our new brands that we are partnering with. Cudy is a manufacturer of a wide range of products focusing on network solutions for consumers, SMEs, and ISPs. Their range includes high-quality routers, mesh systems, indoor wireless solutions and PoE Switches. What initially caught our attention with this brand was the incredible functionality built into their consumer WiFi routers. It is rare to see so many outstanding features at such a competitive price.

In this blog post we will be showcasing their most popular WiFi 5 and 6 routers and what Cudy is doing to stand out from the rest of the competition. You can also watch our video below.

Flagship Routers

The WR1300 is a dual-band, WiFi-5 router with four 5dbi antennas and all Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. It can achieve up to 1200Mbps combined data rate over wireless.

The X6 is the WiFi-6 cousin with the same amount of antennas and cabled interfaces. However, it is rated at 1800Mbps due to its WiFi chipset.

On the face of it, these devices look similar to every other WiFi router available on the market. We put them through their paces using our testing process and their performance was about on par with our expectations. What really sets them apart are their awesome user-friendly software features.

Here are 5 reasons to consider using a Cudy router:

1. Cudy Mesh

In more recent years, mesh has become synonymous with WiFi because of its simple installation while eliminating dead spots. Cudy routers can mesh with each other without any complex repeater mode setup or dedicated mesh hardware. This allows you to add multiple routers as nodes under a single SSID which is key for the best roaming experience. The mesh operates over Ethernet or wireless depending on your needs but we always recommend cabling where possible for the best performance.

2. VPN Capabilities

Normally vendors in this segment of the market offer the bare minimum when it comes to VPN connectivity. Cudy offers the maximum with new cutting-edge technologies as well as old ones to provide users with the most flexibility. Wireguard and Zerotier particularly have gained enormous popularity in recent years due to their secure connectivity and low performance overhead in contrast to older technologies. These routers can act as clients and servers so if you are looking to break in or out of your network securely, this is a great choice with little setup complexity.

3. DNS Security

These devices support DNS over TLS (DoT). This protocol allows you to encrypt DNS queries, leaving your network and thereby preventing any interception of your traffic and keeping things private. You have a choice to use servers at either Cloudflare, Google or NextDNS. There is also an option to capture DNS traffic on your local network and point it toward your preferred server. This helps to prevent users from bypassing the router's DNS configuration.

4. TR-069 Support

TR069 is a protocol designed for ISPs to quickly and easily deploy and manage at scale. It uses the CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP) to manage configuration, firmware updates and a bunch of other useful features by fetching it from an Auto-Configuration Server (ACS) made available by the ISP. This greatly reduces costs associated with rolling out devices and supporting routers already in the field. Cudy provides a generic TR069 configuration to allow ISP to use their own ACS. If you are an ISP and not already using TR069 then this is a technology definitely worth investigating.

5. Open-WRT Support

OpenWRT is a very popular open-source Linux-based firmware which allows users to free themselves of the limitations typical in vendor's default firmware. Not only does it offer more flexibility to the user, but it's also more resistant to vulnerabilities as it’s actively updated. It's free to use and Cudy has made versions of OpenWRT available to flash your router if you choose to do so.

We are really impressed by these devices and there are a whole bunch of other features we would love to mention. We’ll be sharing more details on the brand and we encourage you to get to know Cudy.
